From the front cover of Hinterlands of Hope to the end, it is an amazing real-life story of a young boy's struggle to survive as a refugee from the Second Sudanese Civil War. Against the backdrop of political and military conflict, you will follow Daniel Yamun Ukang on foot as he sets out across the Sahara desert seeking safety. I found it to be a real page turner and an inspiration. It highlights some of humankind's worst and some of humankind's best. And this book is clearly a best read. I highly recommend it!!!

This book is absolutely captivating, to think about what Daniel went through is tragic and triumph at the same time. I had the pleasure of meeting Daniel and his beautiful smile and happy spirit will melt your heart. Please follow his page on FB and attend book signings. He is a great person to meet and to read about.

So I read this book and was blown away. I enjoyed reading Daniel's story and his story of perseverance was amazing. This book describes his journey as a child, he was living in South Sudan when his village was attacked. He was forced to walk for months to a refugee camp in Ethiopia. When war broke out again in Ethiopia he and the other "lost boys" were forced to resume their walk, eventually ending up in Kenya and finally coming to the United States. The later half of the book has a beautiful love story of him and his wife. Overall it is a great book. I would recommend it for young adults and adults alike.

From the author of the courageous memoir, Hinterlands of Hope, comes this wonderful collection of stories that made Daniel Ukang strong. Literally from deep in a remote forest that swallowed sound, Daniel Ukang, shares the tales his father told around the fire that gave him the strength, wisdom and perseverance to survive in foreign worlds. With the excitement of Where the Wild Things Are, or Harry Potter, and the lessons of the Berenstain Bears, these tales engage young minds with adventure and life lessons.
